Safe Computing Practices

Useful tools can be dangerous, and the internet can be a dangerous place if you don’t practice safe computing and protect yourself. Computer attacks can strike you anytime your computer or smartphone is connect to the internet. These attacks delete or corrupt your files with viruses, drain your bank accounts, and even steal your identity.

hotZona.com / Fidomains.com Online Safely Recommendations

  1. Keep your computer updated - Keep your operating system and user installed software up to date.

  2. Active and up to date virus checker. There are some excellent and free virus checkers available.

  3. Use a VPN, Virtual Private Network, when accessing public WiFi.

SSL Security

  1. As mentioned above, use a VPN when on WiFi. It appears that even some full time SSL sites can leak cookie authentication information that can be used to steal your identity. Facebook and Twitter both appear to still have this issue. Firesheep can still sidejack your Facebook account information even when using full time SSL.

  2. Google Apps is an excellent way to enforce full time SSL security for your company or family. For example, plain old POP3 mail is awful. It’s simple for someone to steal your POP3 passwords over WiFi. If you purchase a domain from us, we’re happy to help you configure Google Apps for Business on it.
